Five things to consider when downsizing

1 Your future plans

Regardless of why you’re downsizing, it’s important to think about how long this next chapter of your life is for. Are you downsizing due to retirement and you plan to grow old in this smaller home? If so, you’ll need to consider if it’s set up to accommodate those needs. If you’re not and you see this as a short-term step, then think about what matters to you now.

2 Financial freedom

For many people, downsizing helps them meet their financial goals and it’s one of the key drivers when making this decision. If you’re looking to save money, then make sure that your new home achieves this and you’ve thought through associated costs like travel, amenities, insurance costs and utility bills. Paying for a large home can become a huge financial burden and downsizing can be a good way to relieve some of these pressures.

3 Your quality of life

Whether you’re downsizing because your children have fled the nest, you’re starting a new chapter on your own, or you’re looking to save some money – this doesn’t mean your quality of life should be compromised. Take the time to think about what matters to you. Do you still want a large outdoor space? Do you enjoy being in a busy town with things to do? Are you keen to be near convenient transport links? There are plenty of options out there that can tick those boxes, so take the time to find what’s right for you.

4 The size of your furniture

If you’re starting from scratch, there’s no need to worry about this. But, if you’re looking to move with your existing belongings, take the time to make sure your furniture fits! It sounds silly, but spaces look very different when they’re empty and it can be easy to assume your sofas, beds, and wardrobes will fit. Don’t get caught out and be sure to get that measuring tape out.

5 Community

If you’re moving somewhere completely new it might be important to you to know if there’s a thriving local community that you can get involved with. Whether you’re a keen volunteer or you’re looking to make new connections, this should play a role in your decision making.

Whether the children have grown up and fled the nest, you’re starting a new chapter in your life, or you’re relocating, it can be daunting to make a big lifestyle change.
